Born in 1977, Lee Shearman studied Fine Art (Visual Studies) at the University of Portsmouth, graduating with First Class Honors. Originally making multi-media installations combining video, audio, sculpture and book works. He is a multi-disciplinary artist combining experimental artists' books, design, collage and stop frame animation. In 2001 he co-founded Borbonesa Art Company; a group of artists collaborating to produce multi-authored artworks including book works, occasional papers and animated films. Borbonesa also works in partnership with schools and cultural organisations to devise and deliver creative learning opportunities for learners of all ages and backgrounds. Between 2003-2011 he was also co-manager of Permanent Bookshop; an independent bookshop in Brighton for ideas-based publications, artists' books and periodicals. The Bookshop was situated in Permanent Gallery through which he co-curated several exhibitions including Planet Le Gun, Works for Turntables and Gazwrx. 2012 he founded Micro Library Books; a small press publishing platform for experimental illustrative ideas-based pocket-sized publications. He collaborates with artists and illustrators in creating limited-edition book works. Lee regularly lectures for Universities, galleries and art organisations and facilitates innovative and dynamic creative education opportunities in contemporary bookmaking and stop frame animation. He is currently an animation practitioner with Stories in Transit; a social integration project directed by Dame Marina Warner- that works with displaced individuals in Sicily. He works alongside artist/filmmaker Joan Ashworth (former Head of Animation at RCA) and a specialist team of participants to devise and deliver creative learning in animation, drawing, composition, poetry, performance and storytelling for the young refugees. The work is being developed for a public exhibition at Hayward Gallery in 2024. Supported by the International Institute for Environment and Development. Lee is currently a lecturer on the Illustration BA (Hons) at the University of Portsmouth. He specialises in book arts, animation and design, teaches across Level 5, 6 and 7. www.microlibrarybooks.com www.borbonesa.com www.storiesintransit.org EDUCATION 2022 PgCertHE, University of Portsmouth 2003 City and Guild Music Technology, Institute of Music Technology, London 2000 BA (Hons) Fine Art (Visual Studies), University of Portsmouth (First Class Honours) 1996 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, Hastings College of Art & Design AWARDS AND RESIDENCIES 2017 STEM Ambassador 2016 Artist in Residence ROOT 1066 International Festival of Contemporary Arts (Hastings) 2012 ACE Grants for the Arts award for development of animated film The Great Work 2011 ACE Grants for the Arts award for publishing Artists book Othello and workshops 2010 Artist in Residence for M.A.P, Admiral Lord Nelson School (Portsmouth) SOLO EXHIBITIONS/PERFORMANCES 2018 Miniature Marvels: The Art of Lee Shearman, Much Ado Books, Alfriston 2016 A Mysterious and Many-Layered Work of Genius, Stade Hall, Hastings 2016 Mightier Than The Sword, Source Park, Hastings GROUP EXHIBITIONS/SCREENINGS 2019 Bristol Artists Book Fair Online, Bristol 2018 Exchange, Stour Space, London Eyes Were Watching God, World Book Night, University of the West of England, Bristol 2017 SUB, Jack House Gallery, Portsmouth 2016 A Many-Layered Work of Genius Screening, Hastings Pier, Hastings 2013 The Great Work Screening, Brighton Digital Festival, Komedia, Brighton 2005 Fueling Banjoes, Permanent Gallery, Brighton Emitron 3 Launch, Permanent Gallery, Brighton 2003 Holding Things Together, Escape Bar and Art, London The Very First Conference, Permanent Gallery, Brighton 2000 Portsmouth 2000, Cubitt Gallery, London 43 Reasons Degree Show, Portsmouth CURATORIAL PROJECTS AT PERMANENT GALLERY, BRIGHTON co-managed with Matt Fleming 2009 Works For Turntables / Stephen Cornford (Sound Art Installation) Gazwrx & Rayday / Jeff Keen (Print Exhibtion & Film Screening) 2008 Issue A Launch / Sexy Machinery (Publication Launch) Capital Stupid / Neasden Control Centre (Illustration Exhibition) 2007 I Can Bite You / Rachel Ortas (Illustration Exhibition) Emitron 4 Launch / Borbonesa (Publication Launch) Amazing World of Beards / Nick Morley (Print Exhibition) OMSK / OMSK Book Launch (Publication Launch) Speakers Book Launch / These Horses (Publication Launch and Performance) Just The Two Of Us / C'est Moi Ce Soir (Fine Art Exhibition) Sitting Room / Lucy May Schofield (Book Arts Exhibition) Planet Le Gun: Le Gun (Illustration Book Launch) 2006 Montage Over Britain: David Ferry (Photomontage Exhibition) Travel Diary: Del Thorpe (Illustration Exhibition and Zine Launch) Eat Your Greens: Emily Dawe (Illustration Exhibition & Book Launch) Hand printed in my living room: Mark Pawson (Print Exhibition) ARTIST BOOK FAIRS / ILLUSTRATION FAIRS / ARTIST EVENTS -
